Hiring Driving Staff: What You Need To Know
If you run an organization that requires staff who drive vehicles, there are a few things that you will need to bear in mind and be aware of as you try to find the right people for the job. The hiring process is actually going to be important to get right, as you obviously need to make sure you can trust the people you have working for you. So here are some of the things you need to remember when you go to hire people for driving roles, whatever kind of driving they might be doing.
Checking Their License
First of all, you obviously need to make sure that you have checked their license, and that it is going to be exactly the kind you need. There are different categories of license, as you are probably aware, and you need to make sure that you are looking for the one relevant to whatever kind of driving you will be doing in your organization. For smaller vans it is often sufficient to have a normal license, but even then you need to check to see that it is a clean license with no points, still in date, and valid.
Specific Training
If your staff are going to be driving anything bigger than a normal van, it may be that they require training, and this is something you will have to think about as well. Are you going to look for those who already have the required training, or are you going to provide it yourself as part of onboarding? There might be some kinds of training, like HGV training, which will need to be done externally, but other kinds might be in-house. In any case, it’s something you will need to figure out.
Experience
The more experience a candidate has, the better that is for you. This is important because it means that they are considerably less likely to run into any trouble on the roads or get in any accidents. But it also means that you can trust them more to look after the vehicles properly. However, there is also something to hiring young blood, so you need to decide on a balance here. At the end of the day, as long as you are happy with your choice of hire, that’s all that matters, regardless of experience level.
Other Qualities
Bear in mind too that it’s not just about their ability to drive and experience – it’s also about the other qualities that might be relevant to the role, which are perhaps nothing much to do with driving. You probably want your team to work well as a team, and that means making sure that everyone has the right kind of personality and is hard-working too. If you can ensure that, it’s going to make a huge difference to the whole operation, and in a way that you are going to be glad for.
